Akshayanagar (Yelanahalli lake)

When it is full in rainy season, the lake is beautiful. It has a walking trail around and a small children’s play area.

Kolleru lake and bird sanctuary

I recently visited a bird sanctuary near my home town.

Kolleru is one of the largest fresh water lakes in India. The lake area is more than 200,000 acres. It has a huge wildlife sanctuary within, covering an area of more than 300 square kilometers. Bird sanctuary is located near a place called Atapaka near Kaikaluru in Krishna district of AP. Lake lies between West Godavari and Krishna districts of AP.

Kolleru bird sanctuary is known to have around 200 species of birds visiting every year. When we visited, we were told that there are some 9000 birds in the sanctuary – majority of them pelicans. There were also birds migrating from Australia and Nigeria.
You get a chance to ride a motor boat around the sanctuary and see the birds from closer distance.
Here are some pictures. Overall it was a beautiful experience visiting the Bird sanctuary.
